Tesoro Iron Dog 2007

Laura Bedard gave us a wonderful slide show of the recent race held this past February. This race is not only the "World's Longest, Toughest Snowmobile Race" it takes a lot of volunteers, sponsors and dedication from it's Board of Directors. This race starts from Wasilla, then to Nome and it's finish line is located in Fairbanks, totalling 1,971 miles. The goal is to win the purse of more than $100,000! The Iron Dog has a long tradition of being who can make it to the finish line the fastest without any debilitating incidents, but now there is the recreational event providing a leisurely trek along the same trails as the competitors. The recreational event this year also added poker to the mix providing a bit of chance or luck the the equation. For more information on becoming a sponsor or helping in the many necessary tasks that it takes to keep this long running Alaskan tradition running click this link for more information: http://www.irondog.org/

Thank you Laura for a glimpse of the history and your true love for this sport! We hope to see your name out there in the races in the future!

Raven Landing Senior Community Center

Nanci Jones informed many of us of the new Senior Community Center proposed to replace Fair-View manor in Fairbanks. Nanci is a board member and advocate for this non-profit organization with a mission and vision.
There is an immediate and growing need in Fairbanks for a modern retirement home that will offer independent living in a pleasant, sheltered, and sociable community, with the availability of some assistance as needed. Many older citizens want to remain in Fairbanks near their families and friends, rather than move Outside, but cannot find the services they need here.
Mission Statement: Raven Landing a dynamic residence for Fairbanks seniors where diversity, security, healthy living, independence, and mutual assistance are core values.
Any donations or volunteering please contact Nanci nan.jones@att.net
Thank you Nanci for your community involvement and helping the family's of the interior!

Alaska Mineral and Energy Resource Education Fund (AMEREF)

The Alaska Mineral and Energy Resource Education Fund (AMEREF) is a partnership between the State of Alaska Department of Education and private industry to provide Alaska students and teachers with the knowledge and skills to make informed and objective decisions relating to mineral, energy, and forest resources. Lorna Shaw, President of the board of directors, gave us a fun cookie mining treat. We all laughed as we faced the challenges of mining "gold" chocolate chips from a cookie "land" with the most impossible tools "toothpicks", faced being fined, and had to bring a crumbled mess back to its original state! AMEREF has kits available for teachers, they contain a standards based Alaska specific interdisciplinary set of lessons, activities, and support materials providing students with balanced information about Alaska's rich heritage with mineral, energy, and forest resources. Contact for these kits are:
What a great program! We all had a great time and the interaction was very nice for a change! Thank you Lorna and good luck!

Halibut Feed Updates

The Halibut Feed committee met this morning, and the fundraiser date is confirmed for Saturday, May 5, 2007 - at the Refinery Lounge.
In previous years, we have always asked club members to donate 2 or 3 items for the auction portion of the evening. To refresh the auction a bit, this year we have voted to have each and every member donate a themed basket to auction, instead of the usual items. This basket can be very simple, or as creative as you are able to make it. Theme ideas are candles, books, movies, a spa day, tools, gift certificates, etc. How about a Cinco De Mayo basket with a Mexican restaurant gift certificate, along with a bag of tortilla chips, a jar of salsa, and a Mexican cuisine cookbook? What about a wine basket? Blockbuster? Barnes & Noble? Your favorite beautician or day spa? Fishing gear? Gardening? The choices are endless.

Joanne Trefethen and I will be sending out regular reminders, but we appreciate every member meeting the deadline of April 20th to turn in your completed basket. You can drop them by State Farm Insurance on Santa Claus Lane, Mt. McKinley Bank on St. Nicholas Drive, or feel free to bring them to any of our regular meetings prior to April 20th.
If you have questions, please don't hesitate to ask - and if for some reason you are unable to participate, be sure to let one of us know as soon as you can.
Thanks for your contribution towards making this year's auction the best one ever! Yours in Rotary, Tammy Colledge
