Ballroom Dance Club of Fairbanks

It was a great pleasure having Holly Stack and Lorrie Rea come to North Pole and give us a overview of all the dances that are taught at the club. Their club consists of 140 or so members and it was discovered that some of our very own members have learned a step or two! Thank you both for your information and for providing our area with a healthy way to get out and meet new friends!

North Pole Community Chamber of Commerce

Jeff Jacobson was our entertainer for today's presentation. He shared today what we should expect from our Chamber and advocate new members to be apart of developing a community we all can be proud of. Our town is growing, there is no question about that, we must move with the change and continue to provide more services and make it attractive for large corporations interested in our town.

Jeff asks that if you are not currently a member to inquire about the benefits packages and consider becoming a part of the future.

The Chamber is in the process of developing a state of the art website that will help the members gain additional exposure, this will be up and running soon!

Wednesday June 13th 5:30-7:30pm at the North Pole City hall will host a Public Workshop inviting everyone to come share and develop the vision. Door prizes are available and Childcare will be offered.

Monthly board meetings at Mt Mckinley the second Tuesday of every month at 7pm

The first Friday of each month there is an art exhibit at the Grange Hall of local artists.

The mission of the North Pole Community Chamber of Commerce is to help promote and influence the responsible development of North Pole and the surrounding communities, both in economic vitality and quality of life, through collaborative leadership, business advocacy and member-driven services.

North Pole Rotary Foundation Scholarship

I presented Ray Barbaza with the $4,000 North Pole Rotary Foundation scholarship May 15th at the North Pole High School Memory Night and Awards ceremony. He was very happy! He received lots of smaller scholarships and recognitions, so was back and forth to the stage a lot. He's a great kid.

Golden Retriever Rescue

Susan Sampson, co-founder, president and adoption coordinator from Golden Retriever Rescue of Fairbanks (GRRF) addressed club members on Wednesday May 16. GRRF rescues unwanted and abandoned Goldens, Labs and Retriever mixed dogs and places them into loving homes. They promote and provide education about dogs, dog care and obedience/behavior, and promote spay/neuter in order to address the pet overpopulation problem. GRRF is providing Canine Good Citizen Testing at the May Pets and People Day. In July they will participate in the Mutt March as well as at the Responsible Dog Ownership Day events in September. In addition to rescuing dogs from vets, people, or the Animal Shelter, GRRF receives dogs from around Alaska. Frontier Flying generously flies the dogs to Fairbanks for free. The dogs are placed in foster homes where they receive basic training if needed, and until it is determined they are ready for adoption. No dog is placed in foster care longer than six months. The dogs are matched with people after in-home visits. Foster care homes don't receive any reimbursement for their services.Joining Susan was the Pauley family and their six-month old Golden Retriever rescue, Jewel. Jewel is being trained as a service dog. "When you see a blue service vest, please don't pet the dogs, they are working" stated Mark Pauley. Mark and his family will have Jewel for about another year, training her for Mark's mother. When fully trained, she will brace Mark's mom, learn to retrieve dropped items, turn lights on and off, open and close drawers and doors, and more. For more information or to see what dogs they have available, visit http://www.grrf.org/.

KUAC

We had the pleasure of having Greg Petrowich, Gretchen Gordon, and Tammy Tragis-McCook visit on May 2nd and provide us a peek at what KUAC's roll in the production, organization, marketing, and community involvement for all of us from age 2-100. Both KUAC-FM and KUAC-TV were the first public radio and television stations in the 49th state and have soared to the top receiving the top honors at the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Northwest Chapter's 43rd annual Emmy Award. Congratulations KUAC and we all support all your efforts! Please visit their website for a tour or donation at: http://www.kuac.org/

Arthur S. Buswell Service Award

Rotarians interesting in contributing to the Arthur S. Buswell Service Award fund may do so a www.uaf.edu/giving or by calling 474-6402. Art was an honorary member of our club, even though he was a member of the Downtown Fairbanks Club. He was a Past District Governor who embodied the Rotary ideal of "Service Above Self", and never missed a meeting. He had well over 100% attendance. The Arthur S. Buswell Service Award fund has been established at UAF to recognize and reward a graduating UAF senior for community service performed during his or her academic career. The first recipient will receive this award during the 2008 UAF commencement week activities. The fund is more than half way to the goal of $25,000, which will assure continued annual awards. Your tax-qualified donation honors a man who truly lived by those words "Service Above Self".

The City of North Pole will be planting two trees at the Jimmy O'Connor Park in honor of Arbor Day. This is our park!

2007 Scholarship Recipients

North Pole Rotary & Larry Swenson Memorial

Our Foundation scholarship committee met last evening, and I am pleased to share the names of the 2007 North Pole Rotary Scholarship recipients with our club.
The committee would like to ask that you keep this information confidential, until the individuals are notified this next Tuesday evening, May 15th.
The North Pole Rotary scholarship will be awarded to Ray Barbaza, a senior at NPHS. Ray plans to pursue his undergraduate degree in pre-medicine. This scholarship is payable at $1000.00 per year, over four years, for a total of $4000.00, as long as the student remains enrolled full-time in a college or university.
The Larry Swenson Memorial scholarship will be awarded to Kristine Maillard, a senior at Star of the North Secondary School, North Pole Campus. Kristie has been accepted into the Nursing program at Spokane Falls Community College, in Spokane, Washington. This is a one-time scholarship, provided to a graduating senior that plans to enroll full time in any vocational-technical, trade, or associate program. The total value of the scholarship is $5000.00.
Jeri Wigdahl will present our scholarship letter to Ray, during the Senior Memories and Awards night to be held at NPHS this next Tuesday evening. Star of the North also plans to present a similar program at their location on Tuesday evening, and they have asked that we allow them to surprise Kristie as well.
The criteria that the committee used in order to score each of the applications submitted included consideration of the individual's community involvement, school involvement, leadership skills, financial need, overall package presentation, and their desire to contribute and provide service in the future.
Yours in Rotary,
Tammy Colledge President - North Pole Rotary Foundation 2007-2008
