Alaska Military Youth Academy

Is your teen having behavior or academic problems in school? The State of Alaska Military Youth Academy may be the answer. The Academy has graduated 2,500 cadets since opening in 1994 at Ft. Richardson in Anchorage, Admissions Officer Joe Blackburn told North Pole Rotary. Cadets learn self respect, motivation, team work and discipline. An accredited school, curriculum disciplines such as hotel management, culinary, certifications in MicroSoft, EMT, Certified Nurses Assistants and more are offered.
A high school student has to want to attend the Academy. They cannot be forced or ordered to attend. It is a boarding school, but not a boot camp or jail. If a student has an A or B Felony, they cannot be admitted. If accepted, there is no charge for the student. The State of Alaska even pays airfare for students outside of the Anchorage area to attend the Academy.
A candidate for the Academy will first got through a two week pre-challenge phase. This is an orientation and isn't easy, learning the military style, even having to do serious PT. Many candidates wash out in this first phase. If a candidate makes it through this first phase, they become a cadet and move to the second phase, the challenge phase, a five-month process. Following this phase, they move into the final phase, the after-care phase. The cadet graduates from the Academy and a mentor is assigned to the cadet for one year. The Academy follows up with the cadet on a regular basis during this first year. Graduates have a 85-95% success rate. They return to school, go on to college or a trade school, or join the military.
The Academy is held twice a year, in April and October. There are 45 candidates from Interior Alaska starting on Monday October 1.
Rotarian A.C. Woolnough and principal at North Pole High School had high praise for the program and what it has done for problematic students.

No Fine Badge
Tammy still has the NO FINE badge for September……it will be up for auction again on October 3. Are you ready to promote YOUR business for the whole month and not get fined?
Invite a guest...
Did you know that Katherine and Tammy both won a free lunch on us by sponsoring a new member that was accepted into the club? You can too! Bring a new member into the club and lunch is on us!
GSE update
Thank you Tammy Randolph for offering to host a GSE interviewee.
The GSE Committee is still looking for homes for potential GSE team members who are interviewing in Fairbanks the weekend of October 5 & 6….that's just two weekends away. Potential team members are arriving on Friday evening October 5. They will be in meetings most of the time. It would be helpful if you could provide some transportation, but the GSE Committee can also get help with that. Right now they need help for beds. These are Rotarians and young adults (probably 27- 60), not teenagers.
Please contact Sue Foley (foleyhs@alaska.net) and Patty Merritt (ffpam1@uaf.edu) with your information if you can help.

Story...
Dear fellow Rotarians, please share this with your club members.
Wilfrid J. Wilkinson, president of Rotary International, has a story on-line on an internet news web site called the "Globe and Mail" at www.theglobeandmail.com
You can search the site for the story using the search tool at the upper right of the page. Key word Rotary. Or you can copy / paste this lengthy address into your browser window:
article appeared September 19th in the Globe and Mail! It is on the Internet only ?" they call it a web exclusive.
According to the Ed-Op editor, the web version received 500,000 hits daily (not sure what she means by visitors ?" assuming it's hits). The paid circulation is about 350,000. for the print version. I am one of those online readers and it is a growing trend.

Kayla Clark with RYLA's presentation
Kayla's fun self assessment of our own personalities was for some a surprise and others no surprise at all. We had little colored cards that described different personalities, we were suppose to arrange the cards in order of what we think our personalities are. Then we took a deeper look into the meaning of the descriptions and then rearranged them. The next step we arranged more descriptions in order from the most to the least. After some arithmetic we found our true colors! Some found themselves struggling with the meaning and asking their neighbor if they are really that way. It was discovered that most Rotarian's were Gold. This color represented Loyal, Responsible, Practical, Dependable, Organized, and Caring. Thank you Kayla for the fun presentation and look forward to future visits! For more on RYLA go to: http://www.rotary.org/programs/ryla/

September is Rotary New Generations Month

As Past RI President Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar said September 2005, "News Generations Month is the "month of our future" because investing in our youth is our future." We should be looking into our own families, into RYLA and Rotary Exchange students to become our new generation of Rotary. Rotary Group Study Exchange
The Group Study Exchange (GSE) program of The Rotary Foundation is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for young business and professional men and women between the ages of 25 and 40 and in the early years of their professional lives. The program provides travel grants for teams to exchange visits between paired areas in different countries. For four to six weeks, team members experience the host country's institutions and ways of life, observe their own vocations as practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas.

Sept 11th Message from Jeri
This week Team B brings us guest speaker Kayla Clark. A senior at North Pole High School, Kayla participated in the RYLA program last year. Her topic is RYLA's True Colors Assessment. I'm curious as to what that might be about aren't you? Kayla is a good example of Rotary's New Generations Month!
Dave, Donna and Katherine, along with Terry, have been doing a lot of work organizing the rose sale. Roses will be delivered this Friday and Saturday by the Rotaract Club, or will be available for pick up. The Rotaract Club has chosen to partner with us on the shelter box program for their international project. They are donating the $500 we usually donate to their club for delivering our roses, to the shelter box program. Kudos to the Rotaract Club! And kudos to Terry and Michelle at Mt. McKinley Bank for allowing us to use their downtown Fairbanks and NP locations to pick up roses. Kyong Hollen, owner of Santina's Flowers deserves kudos as well for offering to sell us the roses at a reduced price for our fundraiser. To those of you that took the time to sell the roses, thank you! We sold 191 dozen roses! It takes a lot of work on the co-chairs part to organize this fundraiser and we really appreciate all the hours you put into this! THANK YOU!!!
Board meeting at 11A Wednesday at the Pagoda before our regular luncheon meeting. If you're not a board member, this counts as a make up for you.
Only 39 days until the Health Fair and the Rotary 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament! Have you asked Joann or Michelle how YOU can help?!

Membership Drive

Fred Brantingham brought his friend "Frolic" to give us his version of what membership means to our club. Most club members join to Network and provide community service. Fred further explained his analogy with "Frolic" that it is important for our club to expand and have growth, or was is multiply? Growth could mean a new Dinner club perhaps? Or without grown "Frolick's" species would go away. It has been the clubs goal to maintain and grow by a minimum of five this year. Fred wants to meet and exceed this goal to provide more service, more networking and more opportunity for all. Lets all work toward finding one friend, one family member or one North Pole business member to come and visit. We can work together to meet new associates and multiply. Thank you Fred for your unique way of getting your point accross and look forward to your further encouragement.
Road Clean up

Our Rotary mile is looking a whole lot cleaner thanks to the efforts of the following folks last night:
Mistress of the Clean Mile Barbara, who organized our fall clean up.
BBQ Hostess with the Mostess Marissa and husband Grill King Brian for hosting the BBQ at their home.
Terry Ellington for donating a $50 gift certificate to the Turtle Club which Tammy won at the BBQ.
Volunteers Katherine, Margarita, Michelle, Jeff J, Jeff T and son Garrett, Chuck and wife Heather, Tammy, Alana, A.C., Jerry, Tasmine and daughter Carson, and Brock
Each of these Rotarians made a huge difference picking up trash, some even winding what seemed like miles of construction wire/tape, and will receive a make up! Thank you for all you do to make our community a better place to live!
